In the morning, Lin Shen's in an apron, a full breakfast spread on the table.
"So much food. Guests coming?" I ask, surprised.
His eyes are shadowed but bright. "All for you. I think you'll like it."
He pulls out a chair, handing me a glass of milk.
We chat lightly, the mood easing.
The doorbell rings.
Lin Shen answers, and a sugary voice chirps, "Morning, Shen!"
She throws herself into his arms.
Lin Shen's face darkens, pushing her away. "Xin Yanan, who told you where I live?"
Xin Yanan, unbothered, giggles and slips inside. "Wow, I haven't eaten breakfast!"
Her smile freezes when she sees me.
Noticing I'm wearing Lin Shen's clothes, she lunges, tugging at me.
"Who are you? Why are you in Shen's house!?"
Lin Shen yanks her back, shielding me. "Are you insane?"
Xin Yanan falls, tears welling. "What are you? You think you're good enough for Lin Shen?"
"You'll regret this."
Lin Shen kicks her out, apologizing. "She's my former boss's daughter. I never gave her my address."
I shake my head, saying it's fine, but my heart stings.
